How to Build a Winning Internship Program
How
to Build a Winning Internship Program
A
successful internship necessitates not just the intern's hard work, but also
the managers' and supervisors' efforts to ensure that the intern has a
worthwhile experience. On behalf of students, I must constantly work with them
to identify ways in which they may improve as interns. For instance, we discuss
the qualities and skills that employers seek in an intern. We also discuss
office manners, as the workplace milieu is typically very different from what
they are accustomed to in college.
No
one can function effectively if they are given little or no direction. This is
especially true for college students who enter the internship with minimal
experience and knowledge of the employer's expectations for them as an intern.
Supervisors can begin the planning process to guarantee that their interns are
successful by taking this first step. Students want to do a good job, and
employers who clearly define work assignments and expectations for what the
intern should complete will help their interns succeed and contribute
significantly to company projects. An actual job description can be very
helpful not only defining the internship but also when evaluating performance
at the middle and end of the actual internship.
Schedule
regular performance reviews to provide students an honest assessment of their
performance so they can track their progress. A good performance review
provides an opportunity to assist the intern in learning while also providing a
true gauge of whether or not they are reaching the expectations of their
employer. Don't make the mistake of using a performance review to point out all
of the intern's flaws. You've probably heard of the sandwich technique to
evaluating employees or delivering constructive feedback, and you should use it
to evaluate your intern as well.
Conclusion
This is a very simple strategy in which you praise
your intern for the work he or she has done so far, and then give them some
constructive feedback to help them better, and then praise them again to let
them know they are doing well and meeting expectations. Nothing boosts
self-esteem like being acknowledged for who you are and what you accomplish.
Interns will have a better experience and perform better on the job if they
believe their employers regard them as individuals and are completely invested
in making their internship a success.

DeleteA very insightful article. It is true that the organisations should make sure that they develop a proper mechanism in terms of providing guidance to the interns to get the best out of them. It is also recommended that the organisations should come up with an agreement with the universities to provide their feedback on the performance of the student during their internship. In this way, we can also get the intern staff to proactively work towards completing their internship as it will act as a motivation factor for them.
